The Old-Juuka (Puu-Juuka) is an a nationally protected historical area located within the center of Juuka. Its buildings preserve the lost art of building artistry and tradition. - The area is located in the triangle between the River of Juuka and two highways.
Next to the River of Juuka, by the banks of the Pielinen lake, a settlement was formed during the 15th century. Towards the end of the 18th century, settlers started building houses next to what we now call the Nurmeksentie/Joensuuntie Highway. Traders established shops, and worked hand in hand with farmers who tilled the land for its nutrition. The oldest buildings in Juuka date back to the 118th and 19th century while the newest buildings date as far back as the 1960’s.
The historical beauty of Old Juuka is in its interesting artistic concepts like pediments, decorative window frames, curved eaves and more. This historical architecture lends itself to the pride of old Juuka as a reminder to all about the roots of this beautiful village.
Old Juuka also offers tourists and visitors the chance to rent a room in a bed and breakfast, art exhibitions, the Park of the Herralankoski with its small manmade tributary designed specifically so people can use the water to wash carpets and more. The community college of Juuka is located within Old Juuka as well as the Peoples house ( a place for music shows, standup comedy and other cultural activities) as well as the Estate of Artists which hosts many different entrepreneurs and their products.
