The Ridges of Juuka and the River of Keihäsjoki

The Ridges of Juuka and the River of Keihäsjoki

Juukaharju ja Keihäsjoki

Level of difficulty: Average

This scenic route peppered with ridges, swamps, lakes and old deadwood forests is a hikers heaven. The route is approximately 7 kilometers long, and the ridge itself is covered with white, spherical lichen. The ridge belongs to the nature preserve of Iso-Karhu (The big bear) and due to this, the pines have been able to grow extremely tall and thick – Legend says it is impossible to hug the thickest tree along the route. The route hosts a variety of grouse, for instance the large, spectacular capercaillie. Cottages built at the start of this route, next to the Iso-Karhu lake, can be rented by contacting Jukka-Pekka Nykyri, Ph. +358 50 501 5499.

The largest protected forests in Juuka is located by the River of Keihäsjoki which is covered in little ridges, hillocks, swamps and kettle holes. The route is approximately five kilometers long and passes by the River of Keihäsjoki, and often passes by lakes which are close to the river. The start of this route passes by a simple cottage also known as the Deserted House (Autiotupa) which was built during1982 – This deserted house offers tourists the opportunity to go swimming, fishing, make a campfire and also bunk inside the cottage for no extra cost. Another cottage called the Cabin of Petäinen (Petäisen kämppä) is located at the end of the hiking route, next to the lake of Petäinen. This cabin is rentable from June through October end and has many legends surrounding it. Stories talk about gold panning during the 1950’s - 1960’s that created many rich men overnight.
