The Foamy Swamps and the Church of Backwoods

This scenic, 5 km long hiking route called The Round of Foam (Kuohunkierto) is located in the Foamy Swamps (Kuohusuot), 10 kilometers away from the center of Juuka. These swampy wetlands attract exotic birds and the avid birdwatcher will be able to identify species like cranes or the black grouse.

The Church of Backwoods is a monumentally breath taking sight along the Kuohunkierto. The natural, rustic church built with wooden benches and a cross, is easily reachable by causeways. The Evangelical Lutherans of Juuka often worship here during the summer months.

Route: Drive 9.7km towards Juankoski from the roundabout of Juuka. Wooden signposts with the text “Kuohunkierto” and “Erämaakirkko” will direct you towards a dirt road on the right. After driving along the road for 2.2km, similar signposts on the left mark the start of Kuohunkierto.
