The rapids of the Vaikko river are born in the Vaikkojärvi (Vaikko Lake) of Juuka. The route is almost 90 km long and ends in the town of Kaavi. Along the paddling route you will experience over 40 flowing rapids, however there are many bends which are suitable for beginners who want to try their hands at whitewater rafting. The Vaikko river has been stocked with valuable fish species like Salmon trouts and graylings. Fishing license can be obtained from ABC Juuka ABC Juuka (+358 10 763 7642) and Sport-Kone Halonen (+358 50 593 4933).
The Vaikkojärvi is peppered with rocks laid during the 1930-1950’s by loggers who used them to guide floating logs through the rapids.
The teepee of Tamminiemi
The teepee of Tamminiemi stands next to the beautiful shore of Vaikkojärvi. The hut, made out of logs will easily accommodate upon 30 people and is open to be used by the public. There is a small box that is for anyone who would like to donate money towards the upkeep of the teepee.
The hut is located on the shores of the Vaikko river giving visitors access to paddle boats, swimming spots, and even beach volleyball. The hut is also rentable for private use from Seppo Tuononen (+358 50 522 8849).
Route: Drive from roundabout of Juuka to Juankoski for 19km. Turn right to Vaikontie, drive 2,5km and you’re on the shore of Vaikkojärvi.
The lean-to of Myllykoski -rapid
Along the banks of the Vaikko river is an easily accessible camping spot. The bend of the river, called the Myllykoski rapids offers a lean to for tourists as well as a campfire. Ideally designed for fishermen, families with kinds and groups of friends, this lean to is the perfect place to freshen up, take a nap, grill and create new memories while simultaneously trying your luck at fishing in the rapids!

The Hut Village of Menninkäinen
In the shadows of hills of Juuka by the shores of the Vaikkojärvi is the hut village of Menninkäinen. This village offers the serenity of peace and quiet, and is filled with the silence of nature. Spanning four hectares, the huts are equipped with sleeping spots covered with reindeer-fur, a small campfire and equipment to make tea or coffee.
There are also a few rentable granaries for those who prefer sleeping under a tin roof. Renting as hut includes a fishing license, usage of the canoes, fishing rods, access to the cooking area s well as the sauna. You can also rent a floating sauna, which is powered by a boat motor, to take your sauna deep into the waters of the Vaikkojärvi for deep water dips into the lake. While the rent of the are starts at 45€ for the first night, subsequent nights are offered at 25€ per night. To book a hut or a granary please contact Keijo Tuononen (+358 40 057 1058).
